Rafting and Kayaking in the High Jungle.
- Chancas Expeditions
offers whitewater rafting and kayak rental on the Mayo River in the
Department of San Martin. We offer a choice of paddle and oar rafts,
inflatable, sit-on-top and conventional kayaks.
 The Lower Mayo,
near Tarapoto, passes villages of Quechua speaking Lamista Indians,
descendants of the Chancas who escaped from Inca domination in the 15th
century. The Lower Mayo is suitable for the entire family with rapids
Class II and III only 30 km. from the city of Tarapoto. Trips are from
3.5 - 4 hours with 1.5 hours on the river. You will see variety of birds
such as herons, hoatzins, caciques, and others and occasionally tamarin
monkeys, agoutis and river otters.
- The middle section
of the Mayo, near the city of Moyobamba, has Class II, III and IV (depending
on river levels) passing through narrow orchid covered canyons. Suitable
for 6 years and over in dry season (July-October) and 16 years and over
in rainy season. In the Middle Mayo commonly seen are Saddleback Tamarin
monkeys, toucans and river otters. Middle Mayo trips are the entire
day with lunch provided.
